Case Study: Long-Term Acute Care Hospital

Challenge: A long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) faced ongoing risk of carbapenem-resistant organism (CRO) transmission among a high-acuity patient population. From January 2023 to July 2025, 24 patients with known CRO colonization or infection were admitted. Manual cleaning alone lacked consistency, auditability, and speed for isolation and other high-risk rooms, while legacy no-touch systems added downtime and operational complexity. Infection prevention leaders needed a validated, efficient approach that could integrate into a broader multidisciplinary infection control program.
Solution: The hospital implemented a comprehensive CRO mitigation program using Breezy Blue aerosolized hydrogen peroxide (aHP) systems as an enabling technology for isolation and high-risk rooms. Breezy delivered rapid whole-room coverage, <15-minute treatment time, and no room sealing, with remote activation and real-time tracking to support compliance and audits. Integrated with antimicrobial stewardship, staff training, and ongoing monitoring, the program resulted in only two post-admission CRO detections over 24 months—one unlikely to be in-facility transmission—representing a statistically significant reduction versus the 9.6 transmissions expected (p < 0.004). Results highlight the impact of pairing automated, trackable disinfection with disciplined process improvements.
